Chris Ayling  began his career in butchery at the tender age of thirteen as a ‘Saturday boy’ at Tribes family butchers in Billingshurst, West Sussex. Two years later, having picked up a sound general knowledge of the industry and an appreciation of the high standards demanded by it’s customers, he decided to join John Manson’s butchers in Horsham where he spent 33 years!

Despite the overall size of Manson’s as a business, the rise of supermarket giants and their sheer buying power saw the end of many butchers’ shops in and around West Sussex and unfortunately, the Horsham branch was soon to be a victim.

Within a matter of days, Dewhurst butchers had contacted Chris and he had soon taken his wealth of experience to their store in Middle Street, Horsham and although Dewhurst grew in strength, it soon suffered the same fate as Manson’s after a number of years.

Having seen the rise and fall of these large butchers chains, Chris knew there was only one way to be highly successful in this economy. He had to do something that these large chains just couldn’t do; he needed to run the business as a family business. A business that appreciated good values and could deliver their company ethos through the service they provided, not to mention of course the extremely high quality and diversity of their produce.

In a meaningful twist of fate, Rob Ayling  actually started his career in the very shop they are in now. Sixteen years ago Rob also started as a Saturday boy and very quickly demonstrated the skills required to be an accomplished butcher.

Under the watchful eye of Dave Unsted, the young butcher soon learnt the various skills required to deliver the very best cuts of meat, to select the finest produce available and of course to deal with his customers with an extremely high level of attentiveness.

A few years later and with the first of his two daughters now on the way, he sought the opportunity to develop his butchery and management skills and so left to work for Dewhurst in a number of varied roles in West and East Sussex.

With extensive experience under his belt, he decided the time was right to launch New Street Butchers with his Dad Chris. In doing so, he could deliver a first class service with the flair and knowledge he is so willing to offer.

Rob is highly regarded in Sussex and surrounding counties as one of the best butcher’s in the South East of England. He is a regular face at industry competitions and has a string of success stories after is name.
